Interview with Kristy Centeno!

What inspired you to write this book?

Prodigy is another product of love for me. It’s book 3 of the Giver of Life trilogy and the conclusion of Leah’s journey as an Enchantress/Giver of Life. She’s gone through so much over the years and the last book especially showcases how much she’s changed and grown up from that entitled young woman we meet in book 1.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

Leah Parker experienced much while she was pregnant with her daughter that we don’t really get to see in book 3. I’ve been thinking about writing a new series of books that chronicles more of Leah’s life before and after Brandon came back into her life.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Prodigy?

Leah is a young woman that was forsaken by her adopted mother. She’s part of a magical world that she had no knowledge of due to a series of events that transpired when she was a baby. During her 21st birthday things begin to unravel and she’s forced to take responsibility for her family’s legacy and face an uncertain future.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

It started off as an idea and I ran with it. I wanted to create a magical world and creatures that I’d never seen or heard of in any of the books I’ve read over the years. Once I had things plotted, the story took off and came to life page by page.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Watching Leah evolve and become much more than I thought she’d ever grow and mature to be. I enjoyed creating the tragedies that shaped her future and see how she handled difficult situations. Although her choices might not have been perfect or the right ones, she’s not perfect and part of maturing as an adult involves learning from previous mistakes and doing the right thing even when it hurts.

Who designed your book covers?

The wonderful Najla Qamber at http://www.najlaqamberdesigns.com/

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I’ve thought a lot about this because I’ve gotten mixed reviews with book 2. But I think back to what I originally wanted Enchantress to be and subsequently book 3, and I don’t think I’d ever would’ve been happy with putting those books out in the market had I gone the route I intended to originally. As an author, you must take pride in your work and I do like how I ended the trilogy as opposed to what I would’ve published before I changed my mind.

How did you come up with name of this book?

The title might surprise many, but Prodigy refers to more than one person in book 3.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Brandon or Jae. It would be fun to learn magic from them and find out more about their personalities than what we get to see in the books.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

These particular characters are entirely a product of my imagination. It isn’t rare for me to base some characters on real people, but those in the Giver of Life trilogy were not.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Sometimes my characters hijack the story and lead it in a different path than what I intended. The Giver of Life is a prime example of that.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Yes, I do, and I honestly don’t know if they will ever be published. Some books are from when I first started writing and wasn’t very good at it. I’ve improved quite a bit since then, but still have so much to learn. Perhaps when I get to a point where I feel like I’m an amazing writer—if that day ever comes—then I’ll give them another go and rewrite them before getting them out there. For now, they just sit in my USB, waiting for a home.

What did you edit out of this book?

Brandon Morris was supposed to have a deeper presence in Leah’s life, but I felt it was too predictable. Too run of the mill. It didn’t sit well in my gut so I went with what felt right and directed the story elsewhere.

However, when I introduced Jae into the mix, I hadn’t expected him to take over the way he did, but I fell in love with his character as well and knew I wanted him to have more of an impact on her life than originally planned.

Both men were destined to be a big presence in her life, but only one was fated to be with her.

A note from Kristi:

Thanks so much for hosting me on this leg of the YA Scavenger Hunt! For my bonus material, here is a prequel scene that leads right into the opening scene of THE WING COLLECTOR.

Friday, September 8th

5am

I woke to the sound of my phone alarm, my heart pounding in my chest. A mixture of excitement and nervousness filled me. While in the shower, I decided my plan. I’d already asked Mom to borrow the car for the day, telling her I was going to school early for help with algebra and that I had to drive Kate to an appointment after school. I felt a little guilt about lying to them, but they wouldn’t have understood how important today was for me.

Today, I would be like a normal human girl meeting her boyfriend alone for the first time.

Technically, he wasn’t my boyfriend yet but I knew that would change after this morning. He would finally feel the same way about me that I’d been feeling about him.

I thought back to the note as I shampooed my hair. I had no idea what “things” he thought we would be doing, but I was only going to kiss him and that’s it. It would be my first kiss after all, so I wanted it to be memorable. That way, there wouldn’t be any chance of his touching my bindings, plus, he’d realize I wasn’t easy like some of the girls I’d heard he’d been with before me. I would be a challenge for him, and I’d have time to have my wings removed before things progressed further. By the time I was wingless, he’d be downright in love with me.

The shower steam filled the bathroom as I stepped out and grabbed the towel. I wiped the fog from the mirror and caught a glimpse of the water dripping from my yellow wings. They looked bright and almost perky. A pang of sadness pierced me. In a different world, I might have admitted they weren’t completely hideous. But it was what it was. The world wasn’t going to change, so I would. I grabbed my binding kit and got to work.

I was too nervous to eat, so I forced down some orange juice and glanced at my phone. 5:30a. I was thirty minutes away from heaven.

Kate would still be sleeping so I pulled out my phone to send her a quick text she’d see when she woke up. There was already a text from her from 2:00am the night before:

Can’t sleep worrying about you. I really wish u wouldn’t go today, but I know u will, so be safe. Talk to you b4 school.

Another text had followed at 2:01a:

Remember, don’t get carried away. You aren’t wingless yet. Love u.

I couldn’t wait to tell her all about the kiss at our lockers. Then she would see she had nothing to worry about. I texted back:

I’ll be fine. If I’m a little late, don’t worry.

It means he loves kissing me more than all those other skanks.

The streets were mostly quiet as I navigated Mom’s car down the streets toward Epping Forest. A light mist hung in the grey air as I turned onto Bury Road, though the sun was just about to peek over the horizon. I turned down another road and parked in the empty lot, trying to calm my racing heart. Maybe he had parked in a different lot. My wings started to beat erratically against the bindings—almost in a panic. A sliver of fear went through me but I ignored it. Everything was fine. Once I found Matt, I was sure my nerves would ease.

I walked to the forest’s edge and took a deep breath. Birds chirped in the trees and water gurgled from one of the nearby streams. I inhaled the earthy scent of the trees and steadied myself. There was no turning back.

I stepped into the woods.
